Archival Volunteering

In addition to my exhibits work, I also volunteered in the museum’s archive on a weekly basis. My main project was organizing the archive’s oral history collection. The physical collection consists of hundreds of cassette recording of interviews with Fort Collins citizens accumulated over the past 50 years. My task was to examine and record each cassette, then log them alongside their accompanying transcripts. After the physical collection was organized and accounted for, I entered all of the updated information onto the archive’s online database using Contentdm (this is an ongoing process). In addition to organizing the oral histories, I also scanned and digitized numerous archival newspapers and articles.

One of three drawers containing the oral histories.

Not every tape had a transcript, so I had to cross-check every entry to figure out which cassettes lacked one.
