Celebrations of Lights and What Makes an Object a Souvenir?

Celebrations of Light
Christmas objects in Celebrations of Light

The main lobby of FCMoD contains several exhibits, including a shifting display of various objects from the museum’s collection. Celebrations of Lights was a holiday-themed exhibit that I helped install in December 2016. It contained objects that represented the major holiday festivities celebrated in Fort Collins, as well as an accompanying video. As with several other projects, this was a collaborative effort between multiple departments, specifically exhibits, collections and graphic design. Although the final display was somewhat small, Celebrations required extensive preparatory work, such as repainting the backing wall.

What Makes an Object a Souvenir?

A few months later, we disassembled Celebrations and replaced it with What Makes an Object a Souvenir. This exhibit only contained a handful of hand-made artifacts, but also necessitated heavy preparation. I helped uninstall the wall-mounted monitor used for Celebrations and patched the wall, and also helped prepare the large glass display case. In order to simplify the case’s aesthetics, we carefully attached an adhesive  gray vinyl backing to the rear of the display. I also cut and and painted an MDF backer on which we mounted a wooden sign artifact. In order to prevent any deterioration to the sign, we discretely affixed a non-acidic barrier between the backer and the wood.
